The 15 to 20 degree rule
Your body heats up fast once you start moving. That is why the Cleveland Clinic suggests dressing for conditions 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. The tool adds 15 for easy runs and 20 for workouts and races, after it accounts for wind using the National Weather Service wind chill formula. If you feel slightly cold in the Peterswood Park lot at 6:55, you got it right.
What makes Pittsburgh different
Big morning-to-afternoon swings
A 7 AM start is usually the coldest part of the day. In October, Pittsburgh's normal morning low is about 44°F while afternoons reach the low 60s, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. Dress for the start, and plan the layer you will shed.
Wet leaves, then ice
From late September through November, wet leaves on trails slide underfoot. By December, shaded sections can ice overnight. Our night running guide covers both in detail.
The trail drains fast
The Saturday route is mostly crushed limestone under a tree canopy, so rain rarely turns it to mud. A normal rainy Saturday is a regular Saturday. Bring a cap and a dry shirt for after.
Smoke and summer haze
On hot, still days, check the Air Quality Index on AirNow before you go. If the number is high, run easier and shorter, or move the session inside.
Frequently asked questions
How warm should I dress for a run?
Dress for about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. You should feel a little cold standing in the lot. Ten minutes in, you will be glad you did.
Does GRYT run in rain, snow, or cold?
Yes. We still run in normal rain, cold, and imperfect weather. We only call it for lightning or ice that makes the trail dangerous, and we post that call the morning of.
What is the one thing people forget in winter?
A dry layer for after. The post-run coffee hang is part of Saturday, and a sweaty shirt gets cold fast. Leave a dry top and a warm hat in the car.
